Indonesian / Javanese Shadow Puppet "Sadewa"

This beautiful shadow puppet is made from hand tooled and hand painted leather pieces supported on buffalo horn rods.  The puppet as been framed and sits against a red background sheet.  The condition is good, with all joints intact and the colours bright and vibrant, but there is some age-related foxing to the background sheet.  The leather work and painting are both incredibly finely detailed, making this piece a beautiful work of art as well as an item of theatrical and cultural interest.

The character Sadewa is from the epic Hindu story The Mahabharata.
